Andrew Strauss

I am an award-winning graphic designer and artist whose work has been collected and exhibited worldwide. My designs and illustrations have been featured in art and design books & magazines, exhibitions, apparel & fashion labels, music production, tattoos, and more. I am currently based in Ngunnawal Country (Canberra, Australia) but have also lived and worked in Sydney, Melbourne, Los Angeles and Santiago.

For a long time, I maintained a distinct separation between my art and design practice, with the former being deeply rooted in traditional mediums such as printmaking and ink on paper, and the latter characterised by digital technologies. But over the past decade, exploring the richness of the space between art and design and integrating these aspects of my work became the cornerstone of my creative process. My current practice involves experimenting with innovative technological tools across both digital and physical mediums, creative coding, mathematics and algorithms, bound together with a common thread of elegant and fluid design aesthetics.

In early 2019, I started an exciting new chapter in my artistic journey when I bought my first pen plotter (the AxiDraw). I discovered that the plotter could explore elements of illustration with a degree of accuracy and repetition almost unattainable by hand, allowing me to create increasingly complex and detailed artworks. The plotter became a collaborator of sorts, a robot capable of bringing my artistic vision to life with an extraordinary level of precision, pushing the limits of traditional manual techniques.
